Our Story

The Methodist Church Ghana was founded in 1835 when the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society sent its first missionaries to the Gold Coast. Joseph Dunwell arrived on 1 January 1835 — a date now commemorated annually as Dunwell Day — marking the beginning of organised Methodist witness on Ghanaian soil.
From those early beginnings in Cape Coast, the Church grew rapidly across the country, establishing schools, hospitals and social institutions that became pillars of Ghanaian society. For nearly two centuries, God has used The Methodist Church Ghana to proclaim the gospel, make disciples, and impact society through education, health, social services, and community development.
Today, the Church remains committed to its calling — to spread scriptural holiness across the land and to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.
Our History
A Journey of Faith and Service
From a small fellowship of Ghanaian Methodists in Toronto to a thriving church serving communities across Canada, ours is a story of faith, unity, sacrifice and God's faithfulness.
1992
The Beginning in Toronto
In 1992, Rev. Dr. Charles Coffie began leading Bible fellowship meetings for Ghanaian Methodists worshipping with Kingsview Free Methodist Church, helping to meet their spiritual and cultural needs.
1994
The First Methodist Service
On 1 May 1994, the maiden service of the Ghana Methodist Church of Toronto was held at the home of Madam Agnes Summers. Sixteen adults and eight children gathered for what would become the beginning of a Methodist community in Toronto.
1997
A New Methodist Family
Following a period of separation, the three Ghanaian Methodist congregations in Toronto reunited on 25 May 1997 at Westminster United Church, forming one congregation under the name Ghana Methodist Church of Toronto.
1998
Official Inauguration
The newly reunited church was formally inaugurated on 3 May 1998 under the leadership of Rt. Rev. Dr. Samuel Asante-Antwi, marking a new chapter of stability and growth.
1999
Living Out Connexionalism
In 1999, the church hosted the first North America Conference meeting of the Association of Ghana Methodist Church Choirs, strengthening the connexional spirit among Ghanaian Methodist communities across North America.
2001
A Permanent Place of Worship
In 2001, through the generosity and commitment of its members, the church purchased a property at 19 Penn Drive in Toronto, providing a permanent place of worship for the growing congregation.
2002-2004
From Society to Mission Circuit
In 2002, the church was elevated to Mission Circuit status. Between 2002 and 2004, it embraced the mission of establishing new Methodist communities, including Ghana Methodist Church of Montreal.
2006-2008
Equipping Leaders for Ministry
From 2006 to 2008, Toronto and Montreal became the first diaspora churches of The Methodist Church Ghana to prepare nine local preachers for the Connexional Local Preachers' examinations.
2010-2013
Growing the Methodist Family
From 2010 to 2013, the church strengthened its presence across Canada, supported the establishment of a society in Ottawa, and helped advance the North America Mission through gatherings and ministry initiatives.
2015
A New Home for Worship
In 2015, under the leadership of Very Rev. Joseph Owusu-Atuahene, the church acquired the magnificent edifice at 69 Milvan Drive, which continues to serve as its place of worship.

The Methodist Church Ghana exists to fulfil the Great Commission. We do this through proclamation of the Gospel, planting and nurturing faith communities, raising up leaders, and serving the poor and marginalised in his name.

What We Believe
Rooted in the Wesleyan-Methodist tradition and the historic faith of the Church, we hold these core beliefs:

The Holy Scriptures
We believe the Bible to be the inspired Word of God, the supreme rule of faith and practice for all Christians.

The Holy Trinity
We believe in one God — Father, Son and Holy Spirit — eternally existing in three persons, equal in power and glory.

Salvation by Grace
We believe all people are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone. His atoning death and resurrection are the foundation of our hope.

Sanctification
Following John Wesley, we believe in the pursuit of entire sanctification — a life progressively conformed to the image of Christ through the Holy Spirit.

We believe in the holy, catholic Church and celebrate Baptism and Holy Communion as the two sacraments instituted by Christ.

Our Heritage
The Wesleyan Tradition
“The world is my parish.”
The Methodist Church Ghana traces its theological roots to John Wesley (1703–1791), the founder of the Methodist movement. Wesley's emphasis on grace — prevenient, justifying and sanctifying — on the importance of community and accountability in class meetings, and on the inseparability of faith and works, continues to shape who we are.
Wesley's conviction that the Gospel must reach every person — regardless of class, ethnicity or background — animates our evangelism and our commitment to social justice. His famous declaration captures the expansive, outward-looking spirit that drives our mission to this day.
Thomas Birch Freeman, who served as a missionary in Ghana from 1838, embodied this spirit with extraordinary dedication — travelling thousands of miles on foot, establishing schools and churches, and building relationships with chiefs and kings to open the interior to the Gospel. His legacy endures in every corner of the country where a Methodist congregation gathers.
